You will choose a current issue, read work from a reputable online source about the issue, and provide your reader response. You will write about what the work means to you. It should display thoughtful evaluation of the text and express how it may have contributed (or not) to your understanding of a particular current issue.
A reader response assignment asks you to explain and defend your personal reaction to an assigned text (your chosen source for the approved current issue). It causes you to take responsibility for giving meaning to the text, and contains specific examples from the source that are correctly cited. You will discuss what you consider to be the strengths or shortcomings of the work.
Write a 2-page paper, double-spaced, and in 12-point font.
Here are the specific questions that you need to answer in your response.
(Becoming familiar with the questions before you begin the assignment will help you know what to look for and think about as you read.)
Why did you choose this material for the assignment?
Does the author have credibility to write about this issue? Why or why not?
Can you identify the author’s purpose, and a quote from the text that supports this?
Do you agree or disagree with the author’s position on the issue?
Does the text relate to you and your life? If so, how? If not, why not?
Does the text agree with, or go against, your personal worldview?
What, if anything, did you learn from the text?
What would you like to learn more about this current issue?
