Counselor identity has developed over the past 50 years, from being a vocational and guidance-focused profession to being a respected and licensed professional path with a focus on psychotherapy. Counselors must explore their distinct identity from that of a social worker, psychiatrist, psychologist, or other therapist to better understand their limits and scope of practice.
