Defining Abnormality / Mood Disorders
Project description
Unit 1 Discussion 1
Normal and Abnormal
How are the terms normal and abnormal used in the study of human behavior? Where is the boundary between normality and abnormality, or health and ill-health? Are health and ill-health necessarily opposites?
Create an original example of a person or character whose behavior is problematic, and explain how this person’s behavior represents some of the elements of abnormality described in the text. (The elements of abnormality are suffering, maladaptiveness, deviancy from statistical normality, violation of standards of society, social discomfort, irrationality, and unpredictability).
Unit 1 discussion 2
Case Examples of Mood Episodes
Lay persons often think of depression as a severe disorder that involves suicidal thoughts and an inability to get out of bed.
1. Create a case example of a person experiencing a major depressive episode with melancholic features, based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria discussed in your text.
2. Create a second case example of a client who has Bipolar I Disorder. Be sure to account for both depressive and manic episodes. What sort of time frames are involved with these mood episodes?
