Goals
Learning stories are a specific form of pedagogical documentation. This assignment is designed for
you integrate theory and research behind the learning story, with a practical example from an
observation in any early childhood program environment or home setting, or, should there be limitations
to observe a child directly, drawn from one of the resource websites provided.
Assignment Requirements
For this assignment, you will engage in the development (or a continuation) of a learning story. Drawing
from the “Learning Stories” reading (Carr, 2001), students will submit an example of a learning story.
This assignment combines text and images with captions. You can select whatever tool you are
comfortable using, as long as your final submission is in a format that can be downloaded and opened
by your instructor. For example, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, PDF files are all suitable. If you have
questions about this, please email the instructor in advance.
The following steps can guide you as you complete this assignment.
Step 1: Identify Observations
Following the prompt “What learning have I observed for… today?” Identify the learning dispositions
(or learning competencies) being observed within the context of the child with whom you are
communicating/engaging. Add a paragraph below where you connect with readings and references
that provide support for your focus in this learning story.
Step 2: Select Images
Insert or provide a link to a series of three to four images where you distinctly describe in one
paragraph the different processes observed while the child is engaged in the learning activity. Provide a
clear caption for each image.
