Course Requirements Required Technology and Textbook WebAssign (Cengage software) will be used for homework and quizzes. Course access will be through D2L in Content. Click on “WebAssign – Mathematics 1710-W8, Summer III 2023- Ft Campb” in the “WebAssign Access to Homework and Book” module of D2L. You should not be required to purchase the software directly from Cengage this year. You are supposed to be billed through your tuition, but I have not tried this setup with Cengage previously. I will be monitoring student progress at getting access early in the semester to make sure everything is working. Contact me if you have issues, but you may also want to contact APSU’s Distance Education Help Desk. Their contact information is at the end of the syllabus. WebAssign includes digital access to the textbook, College Algebra: Real Mathematics, Real People (7th edition) by Ron Larson. A hard copy of the textbook is not required. Access to D2L (Desire to Learn) learning management system is provided by APSU. You can access D2L through OneStop or by browsing directly to elearn.apsu.edu. Supplementary Materials A graphing calculator is required for this course. The TI-84 and TI-83 are the recommended calculators. You may use the online graphing calculator Desmos, which you can find at desmos.com/calculator. Students must also have access to broadband internet and a computer with a web camera, speakers, and microphone in order to take exams remotely. Office hours will also be held using Zoom. For more information go here: https://www.apsu.edu/online/current-students/index.php

Policies for Participation, Assessment and Grading Testing Procedure Students will complete proctored exams during the days stated in the Due Dates file, posted in D2L under Content – Basic Course Information.

APSU uses a virtual online proctoring services, like Examity and Honorlock. You will take the exam at your home or any place where you can have a private, quiet room throughout the exam. Honorlock allows for proctoring to occur online via your webcam. As exam dates approach, directions for using Honorlock will be emailed and posted in D2L Announcements.

Grading Procedure Students are expected to complete and submit all assignments as directed. Late assignments (homework, quizzes, reviews, or exams) will not be accepted unless there are extenuating circumstances. You should discuss such extenuating circumstances with me in a timely manner, via email at [email protected].

Due dates can be found on D2L under Content. Go to Basic Course Information, and select Due Dates. In addition, all due dates for homework and quizzes are posted on WebAssign (select My Assignments). To avoid the possibility of missing a deadline, students are strongly encouraged not to work ahead of the “suggested completion dates” when possible. Do not wait until the due dates to start a Chapter’s homework and quizzes. You are unlikely to finish in that scenario and receive multiple zeros.

An electronic gradebook will be maintained and is available to students in WebAssign. Summary grades will be kept in D2L.

Course Rules and Policies Class Participation Course participation is required. Regular access online through D2L is expected to check for announcements or emails, read and contribute to discussion postings, and submit assignments. You should also check your APSU email daily.

A grade of FN (failure due to never attending) will be given to a student who never accesses D2L. A grade of FA (failure due to not attending or participating) will be given to a student who stops completing assignments during the semester. The last date of attendance will be reported as the most recent date an assignment was completed by the student. Grades of FA or FN can have negative consequences on financial aid, so I encourage you to stay actively engaged in the course throughout the semester.

Please see the file Instructions for Assignments in D2L (Content – Basic Course Information) for details on completing assignments.

University Rules and Policies Academic Misconduct Students are expected to conduct themselves appropriately at all times. Academic and classroom misconduct will not be tolerated. Students must read the “Code of Student Conduct” in the new Student Handbook for an understanding of what will be expected of them within the academic setting. APSU Policy 3:005 Student Academic and Classroom Misconduct will be followed in reporting any suspected cases of academic misconduct.

Academic dishonesty includes (but is not limited to) plagiarism, cheating, and giving or receiving unauthorized aid in exams or other classwork. Penalties for academic dishonesty may include a grade of F on the assignment in question, a grade of F in the course, reprimand, probation, suspension, or expulsion. A memorandum of the alleged Academic Misconduct will be given to you and a copy will be sent to the Dean of Students after we have discussed the situation.

This is especially important for the three exams in Honorlock. Take them quietly in the same manner as a test in person. Honorlock is monitoring to see if you are communicating with other individuals, so avoid speaking and work in a quiet area.
