Extraction Post lab

1. What major characteristics an extraction solvent should exhibit? List at least three characteristics.
2. The distribution coefficient for compound X is Kd = (ether/water) = 5
a) Is compound X more soluble in ether or water? Explain
b) If 5 grams of compound X is dissolved in 30 mL of water is extracted with 15 mL of ether, how many grams of compound X will be extracted into the ether layer. Show all calculations to receive full credit.
c) If 5 grams of compound X is dissolved in 100 mL of water and is extracted 2 times with 50 mL of ether, how many grams of compound X will be extracted into the ether layer? Show all calculations to receive full credit.
3) Would potassium carbonate be a good drying agent to dry carboxylic acids? Explain.
4) You are given a two – phase system containing an aqueous layer and an organic layer, but you do not know which is which, nor do you know the identity of the organic solvent. How could you determine which layer is the aqueous layer?
