History ● Ellicott City was founded in 1772 by the Ellicott brothers, Joseph, Andrew, and John. ● The Ellicott brothers purchased many acres east of the river in the valley known as the “Hollow”● They began to cut the trees for lumber and start a village. The first buildings to appear were a saw
mill, a flour mill, a large log dwelling, a store and a few homes. ● By 1774,Ellicott brothers were milling wheat and other grains on the mill they built by the Hollow.● Ellicott city has been known to be the most haunted town in Maryland, there are even ghost tours
that take place to reveal the history behind the hauntings.● There have been 20 major floodings over the past 200 years. The great flood in 1868 killed 42 people
and each flood after that there has either been destruction of the community or death of the people. ● The most recent flood was awful, it put many people out of jobs, and destroyed many of the
businesses in Old Ellicott City .
● The first Patapsco Bank building is on the hill by St. Paul’s south of the B&O train
station, which still stands today.
● The B&O train station, on lower Main St. opened in 1831, which makes it the
oldest train station in America and it still exists.
● In 2012, a train transporting coal, derailed and crushed two 19 year old women.

Questions-Interview How do you think the characteristics of the neighborhood you analyzed contributed to the ability of low-income families to access resources?
– There is always an annual food drive for the people and families that truly need a helping hand. Also, the community ispretty tight nitch, so everyone is open to helping each other out, there are Facebook pages, posts on NextDoor ( a community app). Lastly, the cloths drive, people in the community will hold a donation based event for cloth’s that can help those in need
What do you think should be added to the neighborhood that would contribute to positive change? Explain your choice and why you think it will improve the community.
– I think that there should be more events to help those in need we have a few, but our community is very large and wecould provide much more than we already do. This will help those who are in need acquire certain things from those who don’t need them as much or even need to get rid of them. Also, we should be helping as much as possible to those who lost a loved one or their business in the recent floods.
