READ- Mammography for women over age 40 is the gold standard for breast cancer screening.

Mammography has good predictive ability for breast cancer however its effectiveness can vary depending on factors such as dense breast tissue, age and other risk factors. Mammography as a sensitivity of approximately 85-90% for detecting breast cancer. Mammography as specificity of approximately 90-95% in detection of breast cancer. Research studies and randomized trials and meta analysis have confirmed that reduction in breast cancer mortality for women who undergo mammography.

Like all life decisions, when to start and how often to undergo screenings should be based on the individual needs and values of a patient. It can be argued than generalized guidelines should not be applied across the board to all patients and the risks of misdiagnosis can be frightening to patients. My values regarding the efficacy of mammography should not jeopardize my patients autonomy. Mutual decision-making regarding screenings is the goal.
