“Discussion Topic”

Locate, in the first pages of the report, the definitions of “racial microaggression.” Give a BRIEF definition in your own words. Then, carefully read pp. 7-12, “Students of Color Tell their Stories.” Give your response to their stories. Not sure what to say? Here are some topics you may address (choose the one(s) about which you have the most to say):
• Did the stories by the U of I students leave you nodding your head in understanding, or did they surprise you? • Do you think the environment on the campus of EIU is comparable to that of U of I? • Do you frequently find yourself in situations wondering if you are on the “receiving end” of a microaggression, or if it’s “just your imagination?” • Are you now afraid to say anything in this class because you are afraid you could be committing an act of microaggression? • What are some ways that people can avoid committing an act of microaggression in an online environment? • Have you been involved in an incidence of microaggression? • After reading our Netiquette guidelines, would you add or revise anything to help fellow students to avoid committing acts of microaggression during our online discussions?
