Module 4 & 5 Appraising Research Discussion – Part 1

Discussion work work 1 with Rubric

Start by picking a healthcare topic you are interested in. It may be related to your DNP Project, it may be something you've been wanting to learn about, or it may be related to your current nursing role.

1. Find 3 research studies in the literature about your topic. Use QUANTITATIVE primary studies. Primary studies include randomized controlled trials, cross-sectional studies, retrospective or prospective studies, longitudinal studies, survey based studies…

Do  NOT use the following: qualitative studies, systematic reviews, meta analyses, meta aggregation, literature reviews, expert opinion / expert panel papers, discussions about guidelines / review of guidelines, editorials, papers discussing a disease or an intervention that are not a research study.

2. Research Bias. From what you know about health research, what could create biased research? Do you think the studies you found are biased or could be biased? Why would bias in the research be a problem?

Post in discussion:

-your topic, brief description of why you chose the topic

-brief summary of the 3 research studies you found

-your analysis of the potential bias in each study

-you must also post a SUBSTANTIVE response to at least 2 of your peers.

Please review the rubric for discussion posts to ensure you satisfy all of the requirements of discussion posts.

Module 4 & 5: Appraising Research Discussion- Part 2

No unread replies.No replies.

This discussion uses the same 3 research studies you examined last week.

One way of assessing research for possible bias is to do a critical appraisal process. Using the JBI Critical Appraisal checklists, choose the checklist that is appropriate for each of the 3 research studies you're using. The checklists are on the link below, and they include instructions on what to look for in the paper for each of the checklist criteria:

Complete the checklist and make notes of the page number or quotations directly from the paper you're examining onto the checklist.

Post in Discussion:

Attach your 3 critical appraisal checklists and a short narrative for your discussion post – did you find more or less potential bias than you thought in the studies? Were you surprised at what you found? What do you think about the critical appraisal process in general?

You must also post a SUBSTANTIVE response to at least 2 of your peers.
