Observational Assessment

Assessment of young children with delays or disabilities is a comprehensive process with overlapping components. Assessments of young children are conducted to help practitioners and families make informed, evaluative decisions to assist young children. The key component of an appropriate assessment is to gain an accurate representation of a child’s current abilities and behaviors in the context of his or her natural environment. One type of assessment in early childhood education is screening. Screening is an assessment procedure designed to determine, from within a larger population of children, those who need to be referred for further assessment in one or more areas of development.
