Colonialism

Instructions: The short document selections from novels written about African societies in the middle of the 20th century that you see above (Source Excerpt 1 & Source Excerpt 2) represent different perspectives (views) on the dynamics of colonialism. Based on what you have learned having completed both this unit and the simulation and your analysis of the views presented in the document selections above, write a clear, coherent, well-organized, six-paragraph essay in the following form:
I: In the introduction (first paragraph), briefly state what colonialism was in terms of its three central or most important characteristics. DO NOT use a textbook or dictionary definition. Instead rely on YOUR SYNTHESIS of what you’ve read in Ways of the World, what you’ve read in The Dark Child, and your experiences in the simulation.
II: In the second paragraph, based on an evaluation of Source Excerpt 1, indicate the three characteristics of colonialism in the society in that source excerpt, supporting your assertions with paraphrases (NO QUOTES) from the text.
III: In the third paragraph, based on an evaluation of Source Excerpt 2, indicate the three characteristics of colonialism in the society in that source excerpt, supporting your assertions with paraphrases (NO QUOTES) from the text.
IV: In the fourth paragraph, discuss the three differences in the experiences with colonialism of the societies described in source excerpt 1 and source excerpt 2.
V: In the fifth paragraph, indicate three common features of colonialism that are as true of the society in Source Excerpt 1 as of the society in Source Excerpt 2. Be sure to explain why you arrived at each conclusion using some sort of evidence.
VI: In the sixth and final paragraph, provide a conclusion in which you restate the three characteristics from section I and indicate any changes you might make in them in light of your analysis of the sources.
As usual your essay should be 300 to 600 words.
Documenting Your Work: As noted above, I wish you to document your work using solely paraphrases from the source excerpts. NO OTHER SOURCES ARE ALLOWED apart from Ways of the World and The Dark Child, which you may use paraphrases from ONLY for the definition of colonialism in section I.
