Paper instructions:
Rachel Carson wrote one of the most influential books of the 20th Century. Silent Spring warned of the dangers of the widespread use of pesticides, most notably DDT. Her work highlighted the dangers to humans and wildlife. Mark Lytle titled his biography about Carson, The Gentle Subversive. In a 2-3 page essay, please describe how Carson was “subversive.” You should focus on her gender, occupation, marital status, friendships, and the targets of her criticism, especially in the context of the Cold War.
Your first paragraph should contain your thesis and the remainder of the essay the evidence from the book which supports that thesis.
