Reflect on a situation in which you experienced a child exhibiting behavior you found to be challenging. Your experience could be as a teacher, a parent, or a bystander in a public place. In order to assess what is occurring and how to best support the child, address the following factors from this situation:
Your own lens or cultural perspective. Do these factors influence how you are viewing the child’s behavior?
Describe the context for the behavior (e.g., child’s background, what happened just before the behavior, how the environment affected the child).
What the child was communicating with his/her behavior?
Explain new skills that would help this child to act more appropriately in this situation.
How you might you teach these skills to this child?
In response to your peers:
Present additional ideas about what the child might have been communicating, what skills would help this child in the future, and how these skills might be taught. Share any similar situations that you have encountered.
