In this module, we’ve considered how to make change at institutions by forming committees or unions, and some of the barriers to making change. At Rutgers, one of the unions is the AAUP, which represents faculty members at Rutgers (AAUP is also a national union). Browse the Rutgers AAUP website: https://rutgersaaup.org/ Links to an external site.
Reflect back on what we learned about groups. Describe the AAUP as a group – what do you notice about group dynamics? What are the AAUP’s values? Describe at least three ways the AAUP functions as a group.
Now consider how groups are building blocks of organizations – what role does the AAUP play in the Rutgers organization? How does the AAUP seek to make change? Describe at least two methods through which the AAUP seeks to make change and how those changes would affect Rutgers as an organization.
Reply to at least two of your peers. In your replies, address the following:
What have you learned about the intersection of groups and organizations from your peer’s post? How do groups affect and interact with organizations that they are a part of?
What can you add to your peer’s discussion of the AAUP? What surprised you or interested you in their response?
