Mobile learning is the use of technology for educational purposes. Mobile devices that can be used for education include tablets, smartphones, laptops, and personal digital assistants. The most popular device is the smartphone. This nursing program is a great example of mobile learning. Mobile technology in education has been used to enhance student involvement, provide content, and supplement knowledge acquisition (Shan-Wei et al., 2022).
Home dialysis nurses use mobile technology daily. Home dialysis patients use an iPad to record their treatment data, including their vital signs, the condition of their dialysis access, and issues with their treatment. This information is uploaded digitally to the unit and the nurse reviews the data daily. The training nurse uses an application on the iPad to complete modules with the patient in addition to hands-on training. Peritoneal dialysis patients have a modem connected to the dialysis cycler and treatment data is transmitted to the nurse within 24 hours to review. Home hemodialysis patients use an iPad to monitor their treatments, as well as, enter vital signs. The iPad monitors and displays the arterial and venous pressures during treatment so the patient will know if there is an issue with the blood flow in their access. We also use telehealth in our practice for RN or MD visits. We use the application Microsoft TEAMS to participate in a video call with the healthcare provider and the patient.
The study performed by Shan-Wei et al. (2022) determined that the use of mobile technology for outpatient nurses increased the communication between nurses and patients. Increased communication led to greater satisfaction with the care provided and an increase in positive outcomes. Another advantage noted with the use of mobile technology is an increase in time management. The disadvantages are lack of internet or the knowledge of how to use the internet. Also, older patients may not have a smartphone or tablet to use for telehealth visits. Possibly the greatest disadvantage and the most frustrating for all parties is the application not working correctly when needed.
The two roles chosen to discuss for an informatics nurse are a systems educator and a superuser. The systems educator is responsible for developing and training all employees in the use of computer applications and online documentation (Sewell, 2019). The superuser is the support system for a specific unit and helps users with the basic functioning and troubleshooting of a computer system (Sewell, 2019). Technology is an integral part of safe and effective healthcare.
