The ‘Practice’ of creative work, is a multi-faceted and complex process that is influenced both by personal ideas/motives but also informed by cultural norms, institutional frameworks, and the histories and theories of art and design that one has been exposed to through education. Concepts of ‘self’, ‘other’, ‘artist’, and ‘maker’ change over time and are further mediated by lived experience in relation to gender, race, ability and intersectionality.
Choose any artist producing work at some point between the 1970s to
now, and discuss their artistic output in relation to concepts of both theory and
practice in a historical context. Explore their ‘practice’ and try to situate
(contextualize) it in light of the definitions/approaches I’ve outlined above.
