fermentation/production of a specific product, like chocolate, tempeh, or beer.
The Topic study paper is a writing assignment (1250 words or more) that assesses your ability to synthesize scientific, technological and cultural aspects of
topics relating to fungi. This assignment also gives you an opportunity to articulate, in writing, your perspective on a societal and technological issue
involving fungi.
Your topic study should address the following at minimum (see the rubric for details):
Briefly describe the important characteristics of your topic.
How does your topic affect human society and/or ecosystems locally and/or globally?
Describe how the topic may be relevant to your own life.
more specifically:
• Describe the topic and two or more societal perspectives on or opinions about the topic.
• Describe existing or emerging technologies that are central to the topic.
• Present and critique scientific evidence that argues for or against one of the societal perspectives on/opinions about the topic.
• Form a conclusion as to whether the evidence is sufficient to support an opinion, or is more information needed?
• What is your personal relationship to the topic: How does the issue affect your community? your future?
• Cite in the text and bibliography at least 3 references, a minimum of 2 being peer-reviewed journal articles.
