In 2019 you developed an app to help small businesses track employee sales and calculate commission bonuses. The app was simple to use, completely accurate, and wildly popular. By 2021 your simple app grew into a human resources software engineering company and you now employ 170 people! But, with all the growth,
you are concerned that your company is underproductive, and that it consistently fails to meet objectives. Employees seem to enjoy the culture that you have created, but you have begun to question whether your planning strategy is simply all wrong. You feel that you are always imposing plans which are resented and unhelpful in motivating employees. Knowing that planners generally outperform non-planners, and understanding McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y, with some anxiety you decide to involve your employees in setting their own goals.
