Doing so can help you understand and remember the main ideas in each source you read. In addition to providing a succinct summary of the main ideas in the source (a descriptive annotation), you may note its strengths and/or weaknesses and how it is useful to your academic argument (an evaluative annotation). Heres an example of an annotated bibliography entry for an article used for an argument on tourism in Harlem. Note that the student writer opens by summarizing the argument of the article in the first three sentences, and then in the last three sentences explains why the source is useful to their own argument. Thus this student entry combines descriptive and evaluative annotations.

NYU sociology professor Arlene Davila explains that programs destined to stimulate tourism in Harlem have largely ignored Latino/a/x residents of East Harlem, known as El Barrio. Rather than blaming leaders of Harlems Black neighborhoods, which she suggests are seen as more marketable to tourists, she questions the anti-Latino bias of the economic policies of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone. Davila calls for debate about the problems that come with treating culture as a commodity. Although the article is older, Davilas argument is a valuable one. She provides a counterpoint to the idea that economic initiatives adopted since the 1990s have benefited all Harlemites. I can also use her analysis of culture as a way to set up my conclusion.
