Dealing with Groupthink

You are the new Executive Director for a large nonprofit organization. Shortly after you took the position, the Board of Directors informed you that some significant changes needed to be made to the organization. Now you need to make your own assessment. Taking into consideration the phenomenon of groupthink and particularly considering that most employees will not want to seem unsupportive of any ideas expressed by their new boss, there’s a high likelihood that any proposed changes would meet with nothing but support.
In order to make a rational assessment of the need for change, how will you approach the issue and ensure that employees, board members, and others that you may have discussions with, provide you with open and honest feedback?

Develop a questionnaire (verbal or written) to question staff and others, which would reveal their thoughts on a proposed change but eliminate as much groupthink as possible. You will need to define the problem and proposed change and then create eight to ten in-depth questions that allow for open and honest feedback.
