Empowering Small-Scale Farmers: Bridging the Economic Divide

Amidst the complexities of our global economy, there exists a poignant issue that deeply resonates
with me: the economic disparities faced by small-scale farmers in underserved regions. These resilient individuals, often facing financial uncertainty and limited access to resources, stand at the heart of the
world’s food production.
My journey at Wharton begins with a passion for agricultural finance. I recognize that the plight of small-scale farmers is not just a local concern but a global challenge with far-reaching economic, social, and political consequences. Their financial vulnerabilities often stem from limited access to capital, markets and knowledge, hindering their ability to modernize and sustainably increase their productivity.
Wharton’s comprehensive curriculum, including courses like Finance in Developing Economies and
Sustainable Business Strategies, perfectly aligns with my mission. I look forward to participating in Wharton’s Social Impact Initiative and collaborating with like-minded students to develop real-world solutions that bridge the economic divide for these farmers.
At Wharton, I intend to gain a profound understanding of agricultural finance and apply business
methods and economic theory to empower these farmers. I aspire to explore innovative financial
models that can provide them with the necessary resources while ensuring economic stability and
growth.

Wharton prepares its students to make an impact by applying business methods and economic theory to real-world problems, including economic, political, and social issues. Please reflect on a current issue of importance to you and share how you hope a Wharton education would help you to explore it. (150-200 words)
