Motivation

You are a new graduate RN on a medical-surgical unit. During the past three months several changes regarding compensation and staff schedules have occurred. Night shift differential has been reduced and nurses are being asked to work predetermined schedules that reflect the census and acuity of the unit. Many of the nurses on the unit have been verbal about their dissatisfaction with these changes and are talking about transferring to another hospital in the area. You notice the staff is lacking the energy and motivation previously characteristic of the unit and you are wondering if this is the right place for you.

Our book provides a number of suggestions as to how managers and leaders can “create a motivating climate.” (Pages 478-485)

Which of these strategies do you believe has the greatest impact on the behavior of nurses?
