Systems of Interpretation Reflection Paper
Write a 1-page reflection and reaction paper (single-spaced) in which you evaluate your own system of interpretation in light of the three systems surveyed. Your paper may go beyond 1 page single-spaced to a maximum of 2, but it should not be less than 1 page.
This evaluation of your own position helps you be aware of the approach that you use in interpreting Scripture and the presuppositions you bring to the text when you read and interpret the Bible. In this paper, organize your reflection into three sections:
1. A Brief Overview of the Three Systems of Interpretation (Law/Gospel, Covenant Theology, Dispensationalism)
2. Your Reaction and Review of These Systems
3. Your Current Conclusion Regarding Which System Seems to Best Appropriate Scripture and Its Teachings & Remaining Questions that you have.
Guiding Questions/Thoughts for Each Section:
1. Overview
1. What characterizes each system best?
2. How does each system view the story of Scripture?
3. How does each system understand Israel and the church?
2. Reaction/Review
1. Evaluate the specific points as outlined in your overview (don’t make conclusions as a whole yet, just on specific points)
2. How were you brought up regarding these systems? (your church, parents, schools, etc.)
3. What are the strengths and weaknesses, in your estimation, of the systems?
3. Conclusions
1. State a formal conclusion about which system you believe you must adhere to.
2. Do your best not to say “I like points in all of them,” but to choose a system of interpretation (even though you may not agree with every single point)
3. State your Scriptural reasons for that choice and how that affects your reading of the Bible.
Type the Reflection Paper in 12-point font, single-spaced, and put your name in the top right corner. The paper must be at least 1 page in length but can be longer—no more than 2 total pages.
