Dear Students,
I hope you have started studying for the FINAL Exam next week. To help you get better prepared, I am sending you the main topics for the exam. Please note that the computer will select two of these questions. There are no trick questions.
However, please note that to earn a good grade I expect you to delve into not just the “what” but also the “how” and/or “why” of each topic. It is also VERY IMPORTANT to provide specific examples from Latin American countries in your response. Lastly, your response should stick to facts based on the course’s video lectures and readings. Individual opinions not based on facts covered in the class do not add value. Description of personal experiences does not either. Stick to the facts and the analysis of those facts that are covered in the lecture summaries and readings.
The main topics for the Final Exam are:
• Examining the Monroe Doctrine and how it influenced U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America.
• Examining the Good Neighbor Policy and how it shifted U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America.
• Defining key aspects of populism and describing its potential implications for democratic governance.
• Analyzing China’s key initiatives for increasing its influence in Latin America, and how they represent a challenge to U.S. influence in the region.
• Analyzing Russia’s key initiatives for increasing its influence in Latin America, and how the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine changed the dynamics of its relations with the region.
I wish you all well in the Final Exam. It has been a pleasure having you in my class. I hope it added value to your knowledge and critical thinking.
