A) Anwar’s Story
List at least three things that Anwar went
through while he was in foster care. His foster
family thought that he wanted to be with their
son because he was gay. He had to come out
as gay in foster care. He became suicidal
because he could not be accepted by his
foster family.
How old was Anwar when knew he was gay?
He was five years old when he knew he was
gay.
What does it mean that his foster family
thought Anwar wanted to “be with” their son?
Explain what “be with” means. What did
Anwar want? His foster family thought that
because Anwar was gay that he wanted to
date their son, Anwar just wanted a brother
and a family that loved him.
What are some of the feelings Anwar had (or
might have had, even if he did not say them
outloud) that led him to contemplate suicide?
Anwar didn’t feel accepted in this foster
home he said that he was miserable with them.
B) Shaquana’s Story
How do you feel about the way Shaquana’s
foster parents treated her? Explain using
emotion words. Shaquana’s foster parents
treated her disgustingly. Her foster mom’s
boyfriend would hit her if her ponytail wasn’t
right. It is inhumane the way she was treated
by these people.
Why do you think no one checked on how
Shaquana was doing in foster care? How do
you feel about that (use emotion words.) I
think the reason no one checked on
Shaquana is because the foster care system
is flawed, I believe they truly did not care
about her well-being and safety they only
cared about her having a roof over her head.
C) Roshawn’s Story
Do you think Roshawn should be permitted to
wear her hair in a men’s cut in the women’s
transitional housing facility where she stayed?
Why or why not? Roshawn should be
permitted to wear her hair in a men’s cut in
the women’s housing, your hair is a way to
express yourself.
