Course Description

Provides a management-oriented exploration of human resource management, structure, functional applications, and labormanagement relations. Focus is placed on managers and leaders within organizations and their responsibility to optimizeperformance and make decisions based on ethical criteria.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Differentiate between competitive business and human resource strategies.2. Describe the impact of legal provisions on human resource management.3. Evaluate the effectiveness of different recruiting and employee selection methods.4. Evaluate the components of human resource planning.5. Summarize basic human resource principles used to establish a recruiting program for an organization.6. Explain the challenges faced by expatriate managers in a global corporation.7. Explain the basic training process for orientation.8. Analyze the roles and responsibilities of leaders in the safety and health of employees.

Unit Assignments

Unit III Research Report

For this assignment, imagine you will be presenting a research report at a conference for an audience of newly hired humanresource professionals. You are to share your knowledge about how to evaluate the effectiveness of different recruiting andemployee selection methods by applying human resource management (HRM) principles.

In your introduction, include one type of position you would like to hire for and the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs)required for that position.

Include examples of methods used in recruitment efforts that foster diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Consider thediverse cultures and social practices that surround your specific local or regional community.

Include an explanation of steps used in the employee selection process. Within your report, include a review of the literatureon existing research on the methods used in recruitment efforts.

Your research report must be a minimum of three pages in length, not counting the title or reference page and include tworeferences (one of which can be the textbook). Adhere to APA style when constructing this assignment, including in-textcitations and references for all sources that are used.

Unit IV Journal

The three primary options for what to evaluate in performance appraisals are traits, behaviors, and results. What are thepros and cons of measuring each of these options? As a manager, which option would you choose? Do you think youroption would vary at all by employee, rank, or industry?

Journal posts should be a minimum of 500 words and have at least one supporting reference. Journal posts should includea full coversheet – including your name – and double-space all submissions.

Unit VII PowerPoint Presentation

For this assignment, imagine you are an expatriate manager for a subsidiary of a major company headquartered in theUnited States. You are preparing a PowerPoint presentation to brief the CEO on your plan to address the safety issuesspecific to the country (of your choice) where you are working as the expatriate manager.

In your introduction, discuss four concerns in the workplace: benefits, safety, health, and global security issues. List oneissue for each concern listed.

Next, prepare a solution for each of the four concerns. Discuss how your solutions address the issues within the workplace.Discuss what would be the responsibility of the global leadership team.

Conclude your presentation with a summary of how you noted the needs of your global audience, how you will design anddeliver the training for employees keeping in mind Geert Hofstede’s research about cultural differences, and your plans toassess its success.

Be sure to include clear and specific speaker notes for each slide. Each speaker note should be at least one paragraphcontaining 5-10 sentences.

You must include a minimum of one image or graphic within your presentation. You must use at least two sources, with onebeing the textbook.

Your PowerPoint presentation must be at least 10 slides in length, not counting title or reference slides. Adhere to APA stylewhen constructing this assignment, including in-text citations and references for all sources that are used.

Unit VIII Journal

You have been asked to make a short speech to the executive team on how this course could help shape the talentacquisition and recruitment efforts for your organization. Reflect on the course and thoroughly explain your rationale.

Journal post should be at least 500 words and have at least one supporting reference. Journal posts should include a fullcoversheet – including your name – and double-space all submissions.

APA Guidelines

The application of the APA writing style shall be practical, functional, and appropriate to each academic level, with theprimary purpose being the documentation (citation) of sources. CSU requires that students use APA style for certain papersand projects. Students should always carefully read and follow assignment directions and review the associated gradingrubric when available. The CSU Citation Guide includes examples and sample papers and provides information on how tocontact the CSU Writing Center.

Grading Rubrics

This course utilizes analytic grading rubrics as tools for your professor in assigning grades for all learning activities. Eachrubric serves as a guide that communicates the expectations of the learning activity and describes the criteria for each levelof achievement. In addition, a rubric is a reference tool that lists evaluation criteria and can help you organize your efforts tomeet the requirements of that learning activity. It is imperative for you to familiarize yourself with these rubrics becausethese are the primary tools your professor uses for assessing learning activities.

Rubric categories include (1) Discussion Board, (2) Assessment (Written Response), and (3) Assignment. However, it ispossible that not all of the listed rubric types will be used in a single course (e.g., some courses may not haveAssessments).

The Assessment (Written Response) rubric can be found embedded in a link within the directions for each UnitAssessment. However, these rubrics will only be used when written-response questions appear within the Assessment.

Each Assignment type (e.g., article critique, case study, research paper) will have its own rubric. The Assignment rubricsare built into Blackboard, allowing students to review them prior to beginning the Assignment and again once theAssignment has been scored. This rubric can be accessed via the Assignment link located within the unit where it is to besubmitted. Students may also access the rubric through the course menu by selecting “Tools” and then “My Grades.”

Again, it is vitally important for you to become familiar with these rubrics because their application to yourDiscussion Boards, Assessments, and Assignments is the method by which your instructor assigns all grades.
