Purpose: This assessment requires you to select a case study and critically analyse the system failings in responses to family violence that contributed to
the death of a Victorian in the context of family violence.
Instructions: The case study response will require students to select one of the three case studies (see below) and provide a 1500 word review which
identifies strengths and limitations in the justice system’s responses to the case.
In each of these cases the Inquiry identified several opportunities to improve system responses in order to prevent future family violence deaths. Focusing on
either or both police and court-based responses to family violence, your case study response should do more than merely rephrase the findings of the
Coroner. You should identify one or more of the system failings that occurred in the case and drawing on the material that you have read as part of the precourse and Topic 1 readings, as well as your own research, consider what opportunities there are for reforms to prevent future deaths in similar contexts.
This may include considering which of the recommendations of the Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence (2016) would address the identified
system failings in your selected case study and why.
