Newly graduated health care professionals (e.g., Doctors, Registered Nurses, Physician
Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, etc.) are unfamiliar with the day-to-day operations
addressing practice management, insurance coverage requirements (e.g., referrals, pre-
authorizations), credentialing, accreditation, state and federal regulations, health care
laws, and reimbursement methods. Their educational focus has been on learning how to
diagnose and treat patients. Therefore, understanding the operational aspect in practice
management is imperative to the financial viability of their future practice.
The CEO of the largest health care teaching hospital in the area asked you to present an
overview of the U.S. health care system to newly graduated health care professionals
(e.g., Primary Physicians, Specialists, Hospitalists, Internists, Nurse Practitioners, and
Physician Assistants, etc.). You have been tasked with creating a PowerPoint
presentation that includes the elements outlined below.
This assignment is the first part of a comprehensive presentation you will develop on the
U. S. health care system. What you create this week will be integrated into The U.S.
Health Care System: Part 2 Final Presentation in Week 5. For this assignment (Part 1),
you will provide an overview of the U.S. health care system. Follow the instructions
below to complete the assignment.
In this assignment, you will prepare a PowerPoint presentation with 7 to 9 slides that
includes detailed speaker’s notes of 100–150 words for each slide, not including the title
and reference slides. This means you will need a minimum of nine slides (one title slide,
one reference slide, plus seven topic slides) for this presentation submission. Please see
the HCA205 PowerPoint Instructions Download HCA205 PowerPoint
Instructionsdocument for expanded information on expected detail in your presentation.
Title slide with your introduction:
Begin your presentation by including a title slide (see specifics below). In the speaker’s
notes of this slide, include introductory information, which will include your degree plan
and any health care experience you have or share your qualifications related to the
information you are presenting. If you have no health care experience, you can be
creative with professional experience.
Overview slide:
Next, create an overview slide that describes the required components to be covered in
the presentation. Add bulleted points for each of the topics being covered. You are
required to elaborate on each bullet point shown on the slide in the speaker’s notes
section below the slide.
Remaining content:
The remaining slides will the following required components:
• Describe one influencing factor from each (17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st) that
revolutionized the U.S. health care system. These are found in your textbook and
in the PBS Healthcare TimelineLinks to an external site..
o Provide your rationale for the revolutionary factors selected.
• Discuss how the revolutionary factors changed the health care system
o Include an explanation as to how the factors influenced patient, family, and
professional stakeholders in health care (how it has affected patient and
family members, how it has changed the role of the health care
professional).
▪ Refer to the timeline simulation Global Perspectives: Shifts in
Science and Medicine That Changed Healthcare reviewed in Week
- Chapter 2 in your textbook discusses the evolution of our health
care system and is a good resource for this part of the presentation
as well.
• Discuss at least one major development from each of the following perspectives:
financial, legal, ethical, regulatory, technological, and social (e.g., consumer
demand)
o Include details regarding how each development transformed the system
into what it is today.
▪ For more perspective you may want to review the timeline
simulation Global Perspectives: Shifts in Science and Medicine That
Changed Healthcare.
• Evaluate three different stakeholders’ effect on the health care system (see list
below).
o Include details about their purpose and impact.
o Include examples of both positive and negative impacts made by your
chosen stakeholders (e.g., a negative contribution is when a health
insurance plan refuses a claim for a medically necessary procedure).
o Stakeholders include people and organizations that have affected the
health care system, such as
▪ Physicians, nurses, and other patient care providers
▪ Patients and clients
▪ Health insurance plans (Blue Cross Blue Shield, managed care
organizations, etc.)
▪ Federal or state governments
▪ Professional health care organizations (American Medical
Association, American Nurses Association, etc.)
▪ Health care accreditation agencies (Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services [CMS], The Joint Commission, National
Committee for Quality Assurance [NCQA], etc.)
• Analyze two common biases (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic or class,
LGBTQ+, age, size, disability, faith, etc.) patients experience from health care
providers.
o Include a brief explanation of the two biases and how they can be
conveyed through words, body language, tests ordered, procedures, etc.,
by health care providers.
o Include the impact this may have on the patient’s health outcomes.
o Include how this may influence the patient’s future use of the health care
system.
