This case study will focus on a surgical procedure and related coexisting disease covered in this course. You are to detail the pre-op assessment, expected home medications, and specific tests pertinent to the co-existing disease and surgical procedure. Each step in the case, from pre-op to PACU, should be specific to this condition and the surgical case.
• Title and Author: (1 slide) o Make the title brief and specific to the subject.
o Author: First & last name, current academic degree(s), name of the nurse anesthesia program, anticipated date of graduation, and email address.
• Introductory Slide: (1 slide) o This should be brief and focus the audience’s attention to the reason for the review of this case.
• Case Report: (4-5 slides) o This portion discusses the case. Present the case in an orderly sequence. Some aspects need considerable elaboration and others only a cursory mention.
o Brief description of co-existing disease o Mention the current medication related to the co-existing disease.
• List anesthetic implications of the drugs o Significant laboratory values, x-rays or other pre-op work-ups pertinent to this type of case
o Physical examination/Pre-anesthesia evaluation – what are some significant findings related to the co-existing disease or pre-surgical implications that you are specifically looking for? Include the ASA physical status and pre-induction events and specific monitors, lines, etc.
o Induction sequence, drugs and dosages with anesthetic implications o Maintenance: drugs and dosages with related co-existing implications.
o Potential intra-op and surgical events based on this case.
o Emergence: drugs, dosages, and steps of emergence with patient specific concerns o Extubation criteria specific to this patient and case o Discuss the post-op follow-up including PACU, ICU, or discharge to home.
• Discussion: (1-2 slides) o Describe the anesthesia implications of the problem citing current literature. This section is not merely a pathophysiology review that can be found in textbooks.
Relate the anesthesia literature with the conduct of the case.
o Visual aids are encouraged for visual interest throughout the presentation. All images should be cited in AMA format below the image on the slide and in the reference list.
• Summary/Conclusion: (1 slide) o End the presentation with a summary lesson that you learned from the case presentation.
o Allow time for questions from your peers.
