Commodity Chain Analysis

 

A commodity chain has multiple nodes/places where specific activities happen. These nodes are linked through various types of transactions. Individually you need to investigate the process of production and consumption of a commodity and trace the commodity chain or network. What do you need to do for this Commodity Chain Assignment? (Total: 15 points)
• Select any ONE commodity of your choice. Your commodity can be anything from bananas, to gasoline, to iPhones, to shrimp, Mardi Gras beads, human trafficking, shirt, or any other commodity of your choosing. (1 point)
• Identify various activities, at least three such activities, that happen in the production and consumption of your commodity. Each activity should happen at a specific place or NODE:
A) where the commodity is produced in a factory OR grown and/or processed in a farm OR where the commodity or any ONE ingredient used in that commodity is obtained from a forest/sea/farm OR a where any ONE particular mineral used as an ingredient in the commodity is mined; please name the specific place in the given country;
B) where the commodity might be processed/made/produced further in a factory and warehoused or stored at the same factory in that place before being sold OR the place where the commodity is simply warehoused or stored before being sold; please name the specific place in the given country;
C) where the commodity is being sold and consumed i.e. site of consumption; please name the specific place which SHOULD be in the U.S. This place can be any big-box store like a Walmart, Target, Meijer’s or Trader Joe’s or any store or any supermarket in any particular US city (3 points).
