Identify an issue within the American correctional system that needs to be reformed. Possible research topics include women in prison, prisoners with mental illness, correctional programs, parole/probation, mass incarceration and the war on drugs, etc.
- Conduct research and summarize in your paper the nature and extent of problem that needs to be fixed. Why does this issue arise? How prevalent is it?
- Write your policy recommendations by discussing at least one program that shows promising results in addressing the issue you have identified (e.g. HOPE probation in Hawaii, which addresses the high recidivism rate among drug offenders). Provide evidence (e.g. statistical data, narratives, etc.) to show the effectiveness of the program(s).
