Theatre review

Chose a play or musical to watch virtually or in-person and write a 700-1000 word review of the
production. Failing to keep your ideas within the word count will affect your grade.

Note: although the review is based on your personal opinion —and should not be in the format of
an essay (or APA or MLA format)— it should maintain academic verbiage when expressing your
thoughts about the production. Please make sure you reference the cast, crew, director, and
designers of this particular production when addressing their work. All credits for the productions
available can be found on the streaming website.

Guidelines to help get you started:
• What was the name of the production? Who is the playwright? Who is the composer?
• Who directed the production? Did you think their vision was clear? Did the production
make sense?
• What did you think about the actors? Which actors stood out the most? What
characters did they play?
• What did you think about the singing? Any actors who stood out?
• What did you think about the music? Did the band call attention to itself or did they
support the story and the characters on stage?
• What did you think about the set design? Was it well executed? Did it reflect the time
and place of the show?
• What did you think about the costumes? Were they well executed? Did they reflect the
time and place of the show?
• What did you think about the lighting design? Did it help create the mood on stage or
did it take you out of the production?
• What did you think of the plot/story? Did it make sense?
• What philosophical, social, or political statements were made?
• How are they relevant today?
• Any final thoughts you would like to add?
