Write an interesting essay about “beauty” or the “sublime” in a work of literature or film. What is beautiful or, alternatively, sublime about the text, words, characters, conflicts, images, or themes? Emphasize any one or two elements above the others in your essay. Alternately, focus on what resists–goes beyond–or even redefines beauty or sublimity in your text. For example, gritty or “dirty realism” in some films is specifically anti-beautiful. Other texts challenge culturally dominant or “mainstream” definitions of the beautiful in the characters or events they narrate.
