Behavior therapy

A. Choose an individual or family you have worked with in the past or working with presently either in your workplace or in your internship with the following presenting problems/concerns/challenges in the following areas:
i. Juvenile problematic behaviors such as truancy, substance use, aggression, noncompliance with house rules
ii. Anxiety, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and phobias
iii. Substance use disorders

If you do not have a case to use for this assignment, find and interview somebody who may present any of the above-referenced clinical concerns. Please get the interviewee’s consent.

B. Explain the circumstances that led to the client’s contact with your agency or why they are receiving service. Include referral source if applicable. If it is not a case you have worked or working with now, state your reasons for interviewing your candidate (please get consent from this person)

C. Clearly define and succinctly state the presenting problems/concerns/issues of the individual or family. Establish baseline for each presenting problem or concern

D. Clearly state your treatment goal using the SMART format.

E. Behavior theory and therapy assessment and case conceptualization
i. Identify situational or contextual elements that predispose, trigger, strengthen and maintain the problematic behavior or client’s presenting problem(s) or concern(s). Demonstrate the mechanism by which the situational factors you have identified contribute to the onset and maintenance of the presenting problem(s)/concern(s)
ii. Based on your assessment, identify at least three appropriate techniques used in behavior therapy to effectively assist the client in eliminating or at least reducing the presenting problem(s)/concern(s). Thoroughly describe the intervention, and demonstrate the mechanism by which the selected technique help treat the presenting problem or concerns. Cite at least three peer-reviewed studies to support your intervention.
