Consider the core competencies as a systemic framework for SEL: classroom instruction, Remote instruction, school-wide practices and policies, and family and community partnerships, and reflect on how this impacts student learning. The instructors will provide one example activity for each of the four environments of SEL (see below). Identify and describe one additional activity/practice for each of the four environments (classroom, Remote, school, and family and community) that may help to embrace social awareness and reflect how this practice would enhance student learning.
1 Classroom Environment: Paper Folding Exercise – The purpose of this classroom activity is for students to realize that we all perceive things differently and no single method is more correct than another.
2 Remote Environment: Microsoft Flip (previously known as Flipgrid): A more personal way to check-in with students is through video! If you’re not familiar with this tool, they have user-friendly tutorials. Depending on your activity, you may prefer to change your “video moderation” settings so that student videos can be seen by other students or only be seen by you, the teacher.
3 School Environment: Senior-Legacy Project – The purpose of this school-wide activity is for students to work together to identify an issue in their school district and develop possible solutions.
4 Home and Community Environment: Social Activism – The purpose of this home and community activity is for students to engage in volunteering and responsibility of being an active member in society.
