Q2
1. How does Renzulli (2005) explain the emergence of charter schools and how does this explanation relate to the material presented in this week’s required readings?
2. What are the implications of her findings? Why are her findings relevant today?
Q3
Review the Accent section found on page 318 of our text “An Epidemic of Autism? What do you think? Is it true that there is an epidemic of Autism or are other factors at work? Support your position with research that you have found. There is not a single correct answer to this question so use your research and your thoughts to answer this question.
What do you think that the statement “If you have seen one child with Autism, all that you have seen is one child with Autism” means?

Q4
The media are often blamed for the rapid rise in the prevalence of eating disorders in the United States. Statistics show that alarming numbers of children and adolescents are preoccupied with their body image. What eating disorder theories might explain how media influences are related -directly or indirectly- to eating disorders in youth. Do you agree or disagree?
Q5
Most of us at one time or another have experienced a change in schedule that has contributed to both sleep deprivation and an upsetting of our circadian rhythms. In this discussion we will explore the effects of such changes. After watching the video Rhythm and Snooze – Circadian Genes, respond to the listed questions.
Q6
Substance abuse and addiction are difficult conditions to successfully treat. For example, the 12-month relapse rate among alcoholics is more than 60%, and it is nearly 75% for smokers and heroin users. One possible reason for treatment failure is the powerful way in which addictive substances affect the brain. Most addictive drugs appear to tap into the brain’s reward circuit, so that any behavior (taking a drug) preceding the psychological experience of reward is strongly reinforced. If addiction is a product of brain activity, it is logical that the treatment also must involve some change in brain activity. In fact, there are several forms of biologically-based drug treatments, including the use of agonist drugs that mimic some of the addictive drugs’ effects (e.g. methadone for heroin addiction), as well as other substances that alter activity in the reward system (such as Baclofen).
Watch this TEDMED Talk by Neuroscientist Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the NIH, on why our brains get addicted.
Then answer the questions below.
• Provide an analysis of the extent to which addiction to psychoactive drugs is a biological versus a psychological phenomenon.
• Support or refute the practice of using drug therapies for treating addiction. Be sure you are including current supportive research for your reply.
• Include in your argument above, discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of relying on drug therapy to treat addiction

Q7
The idea behind selective adaptation is that when we view a stimulus with a specific property, neurons tuned to that property fire, and if viewing continues for long enough, these neurons adapt. Discuss how the psychophysical procedure of selective adaptation has been used to demonstrate the link between feature detectors and (a) the perception of orientation, and (b) the perception of size. Be sure to include a discussion of your understanding of the rationale behind selective adaptation experiments and how we can draw conclusions about physiology from the results of such a psychophysical procedure. Provide two examples for the class that support your conclusions. For this week’s discussion, it is expected students will use this reading and outside scholarly web sources to answer this question completely.

Q8
This week we will examine the chemical sense of smell (olfaction) and taste. This is a two-part discussion question (part one pertaining to olfaction and part two pertaining to taste) and both parts must be answered in order to receive full credit. After viewing the material for this week as outlined in the syllabus, discuss the components of the olfactory system: the olfactory receptors, the olfactory sensory neurons, the olfactory bulb and the cortex. Then, discuss what kinds of evidence support the idea that different people may have different taste experiences. What mechanisms might be responsible for these differences? Lastly, explain the role of culture in the development of smell and taste and provide two examples of how culture could account for variation in perception.
Q9
Under the heading method and design in your research proposal regardless of the method/approach used qualitative, quantitative, or mix methods, you will need to discuss the data collection instrument (tool) you propose to use to gather data. The word instrument is the general term that researchers use for a measurement device (survey, questionnaire, test, interview, observation, etc.). Discuss the instrument you intend to use in your research proposal and how you intend to address the instrument’s validity and reliability noting the different types of each.
Q10
Remember in your research proposal that you need to mention, if you are going to use an experimental or non-experimental approach. Discuss which approach you are considering for your research proposal and why.
Q11
1) Discuss in detail how computer databases and information networks may be useful in criminal investigations.

Discussions about the challenges you will face from the industry and their regulators for your technological innovation; e.g. approvals, adoption, regulation, etc. are this week’s topic.
Just because you believe you’ve created the “greatest thing since sliced bread” doesn’t mean the current sliced bread industry and its regulators want you to succeed (just speaking metaphorically, unless your innovation actually is a new bread slicer). What are their issues and concerns and how will you overcome challenges from the industry and regulators about your innovation? What agencies regulate your product and, or service and what is their agenda? How does your agenda fit or not fit with theirs?
