When writing your essay, describe the illusion and think about what these (and potentially other) multisensory illusions tell you about – Whether one of the senses distorts the other and what this means for what is being perceived – What measures are used to demonstrate what the integrated percept is – The inherent strengths of the individual senses involved (e.g. spatial localisation, temporal precision) and how this relates to what we know about primary sensory brain areas. – What does this mean for our understanding of how sensory information is processed in the brain? You may also want to discuss sensory ‘dominance’ and the role of the reliability of the individual sensory inputs and the ‘maximum likelihood approach in multisensory processing.
