My class is called “1922- The Year Of Modernism”. In this class we’ve discussed the inter-war period of the early 20th century, reading and studying a variety
of writers and artists.
For this paper, I am tasked to write about the art and impact of post impressionism. Post-impressionism symbolized a revolt towards historic tradition, and
paved the way for new philosophic thinking in modernism. More specifically, I am tasked to write about the writer and critic- Roger Fry. Fry was a firm
supporter of post-impressionism, and believed it to be important for the continuation in developing modern art. I am hoping to revolve this research paper
briefly around what the art scene was (Impressionism, Cubism, etc..) then to Roger Fry’s support of post-impressionist thinkers such as Cezanne, Van Gogh,
and Gaugin, Matisse etc…
One important note is this is a research paper that needs to have a form of thesis / argumentation to be included… I am supposed to be arguing for the
contributions of post impressionism, meaning it cannot just be a historic recap of what happened during the time. I will include some useful documents such
as critics who disagreed with Fry (Wyndham Lewis), that can serve as a good resource to play “devil’s advocate”.
