EBP VARIABLES

  1. CLINICAL BACKGROUND
    a) Describe the focus of the problem/statistical significance— (CITATIONS REQUIRED)
    b) Describe why the problem is relevant
  2. RATIONALE
    a) Describe how the problem was identified
    b) Describe the current practice
  3. RESEARCH QUESTION
    a) State the EBP question using the proper PICO format
  4. VARIABLES
    a) Describe the PICO components
  • identify and define pertinent components/variables and state rationale for choosing them.
  1. RESEARCH STRATEGY
  • a) List the search terms, parameters, databases, and search strategies used—How many articles did you find? What criteria is being used for choosing or
    not choosing studies?
    II. LITERATURE SYNTHESIS
This is a major part of the paper. Analyze, synthesize, and discuss what the literature tells you about your question. ALL PIECES OF RESEARCH EVIDENCE
MUST BE INCLUDED IN THE SYTHESIS! Once you have discovered your “themes” of evidence, consider the following questions:
  • What is the pattern of evidence? What levels of evidence are there? How consistent is the evidence? How powerful is the evidence? What gaps are there still
remaining? What designs and methods have been used to address this question? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the designs used? What are the
strengths and weaknesses of the evidence? In what types of patients or settings have studies been done? Do the findings vary among different
patients/settings? What factors have affected this topic over time? (CITATIONS REQUIRED)
    III. PATIENT PREFERENCES AND VALUES
Discuss at least TWO specific patient preferences and values that you would need to consider in formulating a plan for implementation.
    IV. RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the answer to your PICO question, make recommendations for practice changes in your setting. Discuss the specific clinical impact of your
recommendations. In order for your recommended proposal for change to become nursing practice, what resources would you need and who would you
    need to be
involved in that change (Do not identify the individuals by name, only by role.)?
You need to discuss what the plan for implementation would look like for your unit.
    V. CHANGE THEORY
Show how the concepts of the Change theory are pertinent to your project/plan.
If you were implementing this project over a 6-12 month time frame, how would you plan for the various stages of the theory? Who would be involved at each
stage? CMO, CNO, ED, Nurse manager and Supervior
    VI. CONCLUSION
Discuss whether or not your assumptions about your original question appear to be validated. What surprised you about your research findings? What
surprised you about this process? What did you learn from this process? What will you do differently in the future if you are involved in this process? Discuss
    any other
    implications your decision will have
