Codes focus attention on important ethical behaviors, outline expectations, protect employees from lawsuits, and help co-workers judge themselves when acting inappropriately (Johnson, 2021). While codes of ethics provide positive benefits within organizations, skeptics claim that codes can often be too vague to be useful, do not always improve organizational climate, are hard to apply across cultures, and often fail to spell out which ethical obligations should take priority (p. 338). However, Johnson concluded that creating codes of ethical standards are critical elements of organizational integrity.
